چکیده

H parainfluenza viruses (HPIVs) have been recognized as a cause of respiratory tract infections for many decades. They belong to the Paramyxoviridae family, subfamily Paramyxovirinae, and are classified into 4 serotypes. Serotype 4 can be further subdivided into 2 antigenic subtypes, HPIV-4A and HPIV-4B (1). Although the epidemiology and clinical manifestations of serotypes HPIV-1 to HPIV-3 are well described, much less is known about HPIV-4, including its seasonality (2). HPIV-4 has been mostly associated with mild illnesses (3,4). However, some evidence has indicated that it can cause more severe infections in some settings (5–10). We sought to describe the virologic and molecular characteristics as well as the clinical manifestations associated with HPIV-4 infections at our hospital during 2004–05.

Human parainfluenza virus surveillance in pediatric patients with lower respiratory tract infections: a special view of parainfluenza type 4.

OBJECTIVE Characterize the role of human parainfluenza virus and its clinical features in Brazilian children under 2 years of age presenting with acute lower respiratory tract infections. METHODS Real-time assays were used to identify strains of human parainfluenza virus and other common respiratory viruses in nasopharyngeal aspirates. One thousand and two children presenting with acute lower...

A respiratory outbreak due to parainfluenza virus type 3 in a home for the aged--Ontario.

An outbreak of respiratory tract infection caused by parainfluenza virus type 3 occurred in residents and staff of a home for the aged during May 1993. The home is located in a small town in Perth County, Ontario and, at the time, had 84 residents and 78 staff. Approximately half of the residents were classified as "residential care" and were generally ambulatory, while the remaining "extended ...

Prevalence of human parainfluenza virus in patients with acute respiratory tract infections in Beijing, 2011–2014

Human parainfluenza viruses (HPIVs) are one of the most frequent pathogens that circulate worldwide[1] . Four types of HPIVs were identified, including HPIV-1, HPIV-2, HPIV-3 and HPIV-4. HPIVs can lead to acute respiratory infection in young[2] , the immunocompromised[3] and the elderly patients[4] . The epidemiological character of parainfluenza virus in Beijing has not been previously reporte...

The Frequency Distribution of Parainfluenza, Adeno and Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infections in Children below 2 Years Old with Bronchiolititis, by Multiplex Polymerase Chain Reaction Method, Afzalipoor Hospital, Kerman, 2006

Background & Aims: Acute respiratory infections are common cause of mortality during childhood. This study was designed to determine the incidence of adenovirus, parainfluenza virus and respiratory syncytial virus in respiratory infections by Multiplex PCR method. Methods: This study included 168 children under 2 years of age with clinical diagnosis of bronchiolitis. Nasopharyngeal specimens we...

Detection and identification of human parainfluenza viruses 1, 2, 3, and 4 in clinical samples of pediatric patients by multiplex reverse transcription-PCR.

We describe a multiplex reverse transcription-PCR (m-RT-PCR) assay that is able to detect and differentiate all known human parainfluenza viruses (HPIVs). Serial dilution experiments with reference strains that compared cell culture isolation and m-RT-PCR showed sensitivities ranging from 0.0004 50% tissue culture infective dose (TCID(50)) for HPIV type 4B (HPIV-4B) to 32 TCID(50)s for HPIV-3. ...
